This image is of the Dumbbell Nebula, M27, and was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. It got its nickname at a later time since it resembles a weight. M27 is also a multiple shell nebula meaning that it consists of different layers of different material. I picked this one as a cover image, because when I first saw it on ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY, my mouth just dropped open.  Also, the Credit/Copyright of this image belongs to Michael Pierce (Indiana U.) et al., WIYN, AURA, NOAO, and NSF.
